Primary Education and Schools
Primary education is compulsory and provided free of cost in Trinidad and Tobago. There are over 483 schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago that have been approved by the Ministry of Education to provide primary-level education.
What is the primary school curriculum?
All primary schools follow the national curriculum for Infants Years 1 and 2 and Standards 1 through 5. Basic subjects include Mathematics, English, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, and Geography and in some cases Religious Instruction. Each school may choose to offer additional subjects, as well as extra-curricular activities.

Who can enrol in a primary school?
Most parents first enrol their children in primary school in September of the year in which they turn five. Enrolment is compulsory for all children age six to 11.

How do I enrol my child in a primary school?
Each primary school has its own enrolment process. Review the list of approved primary schools using the link below and then contact the schools in which you are interested to find out about their enrolment process.
If your child is not a Trinidad and Tobago citizen, you will be required to complete an "Application for Enrolment in a School in Trinidad and Tobago" form as part of the enrolment process. The application form can be downloaded using the link below or picked up from the school.

Where can I obtain more information about primary education and schools?
More information about primary education, schools and initiatives can be obtained from the Ministry of Education through the Primary Education Section or the Communications Unit. You may contact either office from Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, except public holidays. If you are a resident of Tobago, you may also obtain additional information from the THA's Department of Education.
