Joining the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard


The mission of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard is "to defend the sovereign good of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and to provide, on a continuous basis, quality service for security and safety within its maritime boundaries and in any other area of responsibility agreed to by the state to fulfil its international obligation."  As a member of the Coast Guard team, you will play a key role in supporting this mission.

The Coast Guard is an arm of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, which falls under the authority of the Ministry of National Security.





Who is eligible to join?

Any citizen of Trinidad and Tobago who meets the qualifications for a particular post is eligible to join the Coast Guard.  Posts include Regular Commissioned Officers, Short Service Commissioned Officers (officers hired for a specific, short-term assignment) and Ratings.
 
Applicants for the post of Regular Commissioned Officer must:

  • Be between 18 years and 24 years of age.
  • Possess at least five Ordinary (O) Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science Subject.
  • Possess at least two Advanced (A) Level subjects (grades A-C) and General Paper.


Applicants for the post of Short Service Commissioned Officer must:

  • Be between 18 and 43 years of age.
  • Possess at least five Ordinary (O) Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science Subject.
  • Possess at least two Advanced (A) Level subjects (grades A-C) and General Paper.


Applicants for the post of Ratings must:

  • Be between 18 and 24 years of age.
  • Possess evidence of completion of secondary-level education.
  • If applying as a Writer, also possess at least two Ordinary (O) Level subjects including English and Mathematics (CXC, GCE or equivalent).
  • If applying as a Technician, also possess at least a National Craftsman's Certificate or its equivalent.
  • If applying as a Cook or Steward, also possess evidence of formal training from a recognised institution.

What is the recruitment process?

The recruitment process has several steps.  It begins with the Coast Guard publishing media advertisements for selection sessions.  Session dates, times and locations will be included in the advertisements.  You must attend a selection session if you are interested in joining the Coast Guard.  You must bring the original and one copy of each of the following to the session:

  • Birth Certificate with supporting affidavit, if necessary.
  • Proof of identification in the form of a valid Trinidad and Tobago Passport, Driver's Permit or National ID card.
  • Police Certificate of Character issued not more than three months before Selection.  Follow the link below for information on obtaining a Certificate of Character.
  • Proof of educational qualifications.


All selected applicants must undergo an academic evaluation, a medical evaluation, a physical evaluation and a Military Board interview.  In addition, applicants for the post of either Regular or Short Service Commissioned Officer must also undergo a Maritime Evaluation and a Commissions Board interview.  As applicants pass each evaluation, they are provided with a slip that allows them to attend the next round of evaluation.   Applicants who successfully complete the recruitment process will be required to complete 14 weeks of Basic Training.

Are there any fees?

Candidates may have to pay some minimal costs to undergo the medical examination that is required.  The examination must be conducted by a recognised medical doctor to whom any fees should be paid.  No fees are to be paid to the Defence Force.
