New Electrical Wiring Colour Code

The Trinidad and Tobago Electrical Wiring Code specifies the colour code that is used for the identification of conductors in electrical installations throughout the country.  A new colour code is being implemented because the electrical cables on the local and international market no longer met the old colour coding requirements of TTS 171: Part 1: 2002.  It was necessary to implement a new colour code which would facilitate the safe application of the electrical cables sold in and imported into Trinidad and Tobago.

What is affected by this new colour code?

The new colour code impacts:

  • New single-phase installations.
  • Extensions or alterations to existing single-phase installations.
  • New three-phase installations.
  • Extensions or alterations to existing three-phase installations.

Please follow the link below for summary information about the new colour code and for illustrative diagrams of the changes.  You may also view the Amendment 1 (2007) of the Trinidad and Tobago Electrical Wiring Code: Part 1: Low voltage Installations (TTS 171: Part 1: 2002) in its entirety.

When does the new colour code take effect?

All electrical wiring work that commences on or after January 1, 2008 must comply with the new colour code.  There is a transition period from July 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007 during which installations must use the old colours or the new colours, but not both.
